Product Description

"Denatured Ethanol 92.24% Ethanol 3.70% Methanol 1.91% Methyl Isobutyl Ketone 1.33% Ethyl Acetate 0.67% Solvent Naphtha (petroleum) Denatured alcohol has a variety of common uses * As a fuel for marine and ultra-light camping (backpacking) stoves. It is inexpensive, may be extinguished with water, and can be transported without special containers. However, safety concerns do arise from the near-colourless flame with which alcohol burns. A jellied and dyed form is used in the Sterno brand fuel ""Canned Heat"", and is meant to be ignited and used in the container. * As a sanding aid, as the alcohol helps to more easily remove excess dust because it does not open the wood grain the way that water does. * As a mealybug exterminator. * As a cleaning aid in removing ink stains from upholstery or clothes. * As a cleaner in daily housekeeping * To disinfect skin prior to an injection or minor surgery, such as draining a blister (also see rubbing alcohol). * It is often used as an antiseptic for minor wounds, although this practice is harmful and counterproductive, since it kills skin cells, and the dead tissue provides a food source for bacteria(since the wound will not remain completely sterile). * As a solvent in shellac and shellac-based products. * As an excipient in a number of pharmaceutical products for oral and topical use. * As a less expensive alternative to pure ethanol in preserving biological specimens. * As a less toxic alternative to methanol in the production of biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel produced using ethanol is properly called fatty acid ethyl ester, whereas biodiesel from methanol is properly referred to as fatty acid methyl ester. * As a germicide in the removal of fungus from skin and coldsore treatment. Leaked during shipment obliterating the bottle's label
I received the bottle in a timely manner but there was a small leak during shipment and the ethanol dissolved all of the ink on the bottle's label - it's now entirely blank other than a small amount of text on the side. It certainly smells like ethanol and the bottle certainly looks like the bottle in the picture here so I'm presuming that I've received what I bought.Edit to reflect a second ordering experience - on my second order of this product a few months later, there was no leak and bottle, label, and ethanol were all in good order. Prompt delivery appreciated. This second experience is a 5 star experience so I'll average it with my prior 3 star experience and assign a total of 4 stars.

Masterpiece
I am an environmental educator at the Ecovillage Training Center at The Farm community in Summertown,Tennessee and author of Shutdown: Nuclear Power on Trial (1979); Climate in Crisis: The Greenhouse Effect and What We Can Do (1990), and most recently, The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook: Recipes for Changing Times, from New Society Publishers and Amazon.Arriving in Sao Paulo, Brazil for the International Permaculture Conference in 2007, I checked the online schedule and saw that the organizers had set me down for a morning session on "making money from tree planting." Caught by surprise, I had to scramble to prepare a powerpoint and one of the ideas I thought to explore was biofuels. Conventional wisdom has it that "agrifuels" are in competition with food production and climate remediation. I dashed off an email to David Blume asking for an example of "permaculture fuels."He replied, "Well to take a page from the book. In semiarid areas where the...

Matthew Stein, Author of When Technology Fails, BSME MIT
I am an MIT engineer (BSME MIT, 1978) and Author of When Technology Fails, and I highly recommend this book. David Blume's opus, Alcohol Can Be a Gas, is the definitive guide to weaning America from the oil habit via biofuels. In great detail, it thoroughly debunks the myth that ethanol production takes nearly as much energy to run the process as it produces (corn does, but there are other alternatives to corn based ethanol), and shows how America can thrive by sustainably growing both an abundant food supply and biofuels at the same time (they can actually feed each other synergistically!). Blume shows us the pathway to personal and national energy independence!David Blume has been an alcohol pioneer since Buckminster Fuller, one of America's foremost visionary geniuses, coached and coaxed Blume in the 70's to continue to pursue their united dream of energy independence through biofuels. Blume is a hands-on kind of guy, having been an organic farmer, inventor,...

THE Book to D.I.Y. or Smarten Up.
NOTE: I wrote this review in 2007, just after getting the book. I said I didn't work for the author, etc., and that was quite true...until recently. Now, in 2009, I've recently gotten a job with the author's company, helping people put ethanol conversion kits in their vehicles. It would not be honest to fail to note that fact, so there's your update. Here is the original review. I have not edited anything from its original wording. This book showed me EXACTLY WHAT TO DO. Let me start by saying that I don't work for the author, he doesn't work for me, he doesn't owe me any money, and I haven't invested in any of his companies. Onward: this book shows you exactly how to produce your own ethanol or buy it at the pump and switch your vehicles from OIL..also known as gasoline. After reading the book, I know how to make ethanol on a farm...and NOT FROM CORN... but I learned how to make ethanol right in the city. I found that the book shows you...

Product Description

Alcohol Can Be a Gas! is the only comprehensive book ever written on alcohol fuel production and use for home and farm. Until now, it has been very difficult for farmers, contractors, alternative energy aficionados, those concerned about Peak Oil, and small-scale entrepreneurs to obtain good, accurate information on producing alcohol, or on converting vehicles to run on alcohol fuel. And with all the conflicting news stories about ethanol, the public finds it difficult to sort fact from fiction. This text, which has been reviewed by scientists around the world, is the definitive reference work on alcohol fuel.

Alcohol Can Be A Gas! contains 640 8-1/2 by 11 pages, with 514 charts, photos, and illustrations to reinforce the information-dense text. The book is geared for the nonscientific reader, but its 473 endnotes provide the technical foundation behind the accessible prose. A 700-word glossary and a 6300-entry index extend the book's usefulness.

This book is the distilled essence of the most pertinent information ever assembled in one place on alcohol fuel, the technology that can help us finally become producers of almost limitless energy, instead of extractors of finite resources. How we produce our energy from here on out will determine how we govern ourselves and how we relate to nature and the environment; it will also create a sea change in where wealth concentrates. It will determine if the future is ruled by a small number of armed dictatorships backed by military and industrial interests (a cabal author David Blume likes to refer to as MegaOilron or the Oilygarchy), or if energy, and therefore power, is held by a diffusion of democratic entities, based on their ingenuity and ability to gather a portion of their daily solar income.

As Blume writes in the Introduction to Alcohol Can Be a Gas!: "Various prospective publishers argued that putting all of this material into one large volume might scare off readers who just want a recipe book of how to make alcohol. They said, 'All this history and politics is fascinating, but aren't you afraid that including it in your how-to book would scare away some buyers?' 'Put it in a separate publication,' their marketing experts said. But in the final analysis, I decided that this book should be a complete tool kit to revolutionize our transportation energy system, combining a broad, sweeping vision with intricate detail.

"I spent four years working on this book with a small team of researchers. I traveled all over the United States in search of the most up-to-date information. In frozen South Dakota, I talked to Orrie Swayze and his farmer and VFW buddies who are taking on the oil companies, and to alcohol combustion engineer and alcohol aviation expert, Jim Behnken. I went to Decatur, Illinois, to see the largest alcohol plant in the U.S., Archer Daniels Midland's 200-million-gallon-per-year plant. My travels also took me to Brazil to document the world's largest alcohol fuel program.

"It took over 25 years to finally get this book to you. It represents the confidence of almost 30 people who collectively loaned more than $250,000 to see this project through. It's the most comprehensive book ever written about alcohol fuel. Its production has been a massive effort that has depended on the cooperation of hundreds of people who contributed both their knowledge and, more importantly, their experiences." Best Book on Home Distilling out there
There are a handful of books and quite a few web sites that cover the subject of Home Distilling. None as well and complete as this book though. My opinion is that most material on Home Distilling is written by folks who do it for kicks without understanding the science behind it (least that't the way it appears when i read them). This book covers the topic in a very structured manner and backs up each section with science and reasoning. The book not only does a splendid job of explaining still building but also explains malting, mashing, fementation and distillation -- with clear instruction. I found it so useful that I bought a copy for my brother as well.

Very descriptive, well written book
This book contains very detailed drawings and explanations for how to build a still. It even shows you the necessary forms to fill out, if you want to make the alcohol legally (for experimental fuel only of course). I liked having all the pictures and the descriptions as well as how to bend and work the sheets of copper.

If your interest is in making ethanol alcohol then this book is for you. It will show you how to build a six gallon electric alcohol still, and use it to turn corn, sugar, and other materials into high proof ethanol alcohol. Top to learn more

Basic recipe for basic production
This book gives a simple outline to the process of producing alcohol, along with plans to build one very specific setup. The section on grain preparation is very well described in this book, better than the other books that I have read. If somebody is looking to just make some ethanol without concern for the amount of energy required, this book will work OK for you. There are a number of oddities in the design given in this book, such as the concept of a water jacketed boiler. This will result in low rates of heat transfer, with a lot of heat being lost to the surroundings. Also, a batch distillation can not compete with continuous distillation on the basis of energy input. If someone is looking for a DIY batch distillation setup, consider building a Charles 803 column or the one in this book. For somebody who is interested in a robust and efficient process, look else ware.

Great product
I tried this product out for peace of mind. The first time I used a strip it was about two hours after I had a glass of wine and it showed the milk clean of all alcohol. I didn't trust it until I had seen it work with a sample I knew was tainted, so I tried it right after I had finished a few glasses of wine and the strip was very dark, so I feel good that I know it works. The strips are expensive but after trying a few samples, I feel better knowing that I can read my body to tell if my milk is okay to give to my baby. Great product.

Works great/fast
Product worked fast, and seemed accurate based on the 4 bottles that I tested (two I suspected had alcohol, the other not). My husband accidently mixed a clean bottle with a potentially contaminated one, and the strips even picked up the alcohol in the mixed one. Gives a mother peace of mind. Seems a little pricey for what you get (I bet it costs pennies to make these), but I still like them. That's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

do what they're supposed to
I originally thought these strips would work more like litmus paper - you know, a different color for the degree of alcohol in my breastmilk. Guess I didn't really look at the description thoroughly, but not surprising in my sleep deprived state due to my newborn. If you're not dipping the strip directly into milk, it's a little tricky to saturate the pad on the test strip, but once you get the hang of it, these work as advertised. As a heads up, the color can take longer to develop if you don't fully saturate the pad.

While second-generation biofuel production costs are not yet competitive with first-generation costs, renewable fuel standards are friendly to non-food biofuels. MM: First-generation transportation biofuels, such as corn-based ethanol, are mature technologies. Brazilian sugar cane-derived ethanol is 8–10 times more energy efficient, and it is lower in carbon than the fossil fuel equivalent. The mandates allow for the production of $15 Bgal of conventional biofuels, which includes corn-based ethanol. B:NYSE) and the World Energy Council project that by the year 2050, biofuels will source 15–25% of global energy consumption. New Energy Farms (private) is a key developer of miscanthus as a feedstock for second-generation biofuels in the U. S. , Canada and the U. K. However, nobody is a significant player yet. , governmental mandates require that 10 years from now, $16 billion gallons (Bgal) of second-generation lignocellulosic biofuels must be produced. It is produced largely from corn grown in the U. S. , sugar beets grown in Europe and sugar cane grown in Brazil. It’s going to take 10 years for the lignocellulosic biofuels’ volume to equilibrate with first-generation volumes. The third biofuel is biomass or biomass pellets, which are used in electricity generation to replace coal. I am a strong believer in lignocellulosic energy crops, particularly elephant grass, switch grass, or the generic name, miscanthus. Brazil is a prime candidate for growing exactly the type of energy crop to produce biomass pellets from miscanthus, but substantial investment is needed to kick this off. The next generation of biofuels is not produced from food crops.
